RAY, RALPH & BRANTLY
Narrative by Red Smith

RAY SILBERSAK, DRUMS

Ray got his start playing drums in school in Baltimore. Somewhere along the way, he was touched by the big hand of Uncle Sam and given a chance to carry a rifle to some God-forsaken reaches. Upon returning to the comparative civilization of an Army base in the US, he heard a good, big band rehearsing and dropped in to listen. It was just like the movies. During a break, the leader confided that the drummer was not very good and he sure would like to find a replacement. Nothing beats being in the right place at the right time --- provided you are loaded with talent. The rifleman became the new drummer in a band that recruited many of the best musicians in the country as they passed through the
Army. Again just in time, Ray retired from the Army and showed up just as we were looking for a replacement for our long time drummer, Tony Torre.

RALPH CRAIG, BASS TROMBONE

Ralph is a refugee from Chicago where he was a studio musician and advertising executive. He was a big band musician in his early days and still gets a good sound out of his bass trombone. Most jazz musicians use a tenor trombone but Ralph can still get high notes out of his horn and, naturally, beautiful low notes. He and Tina serve double duty because they keep the hospitality table in good order.

BRANTLY COX, BANJO

Brantly can not only play banjo but has a collection of beautiful vintage banjos.  From time to time he brings one or two to the jazz club. Next time he does, make a point of taking a look. You will see great vintage craftsmanship. And he has been instrumental in organizing banjo jams in the area. These are fun happenings. If you love all kinds of banjo music, drop in on the next one.
