Tharanga Goonetilleke
|
The
final meeting of the season will be held on May 7th in the Garden
Room at Still Hopes at 7:00 PM (For directions click here.
Don’t hesitate to call the number included if you have any questions).
Still Hopes is a very enthusiastic host for guild meetings and the
residents, especially those who have difficulty traveling, are very
appreciative of the opportunity to attend meetings on the premises. Let’s
all bring some extra food for our Still Hopes guests who may not be
physically able to bring their own.
Entertainment
will be provided by Tharanga Goonetilleke, soprano, accompanied by Julie
Smith. Tharanga is from Sri Lanka and is at present a junior at Converse
College, SC, reading for a BM in vocal performance under Dr. Beverly Hay.
She was the winner of the Concerto competition held by the Symphony Orchestra
of Sri Lanka, and has performed with them many times since. She is an
Associate of The

and has won many awards for their examinations, including the Yamaha Trophy
and the Certificate for special achievement. In the US, she has been a NATS
state and regional winner for 3 consecutive years. She has been a regular
soloist for Converse’s musical productions including The Messiah and
Carmina Burana and as the winner of the Concerto Aria competition
she performed with the Converse Symphony Orchestra earlier this month. For
Converse Opera Theater, last year she played the role of Pamina in The
Magic Flute by Mozart, and she has been selected to perform the same in
Rome this summer with Opera Festival diRoma. This year she was a finalist
at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Regionals and was awarded the
prestigious Encouragement Award. And last but certainly not least, she was
first place winner of the young artist competition at the recent
prestigious Palmetto Opera “Scandal At The Opera” presentation, as well as
the “audience choice” award! Bravo! (Or is that “Brava?”).
We hope everyone has a
wonderful summer, and let’s make next season an even better one for Opera
Guild than this one! We expect to have our first meeting of the season on
October 1 (tentative date). Have fun and stay safe!

“People are wrong when they say the opera isn't what
it used to be. It is what it used to be. That's what's wrong with it.”
