These pages are designed to
provide a little perspective on this program, which has largely been
forgotten, from the vantage point of your host and some of his
classmates. It is not a history of the program, but rather a few
glimpses into our personal experiences, and the impact they had upon our
lives. For a comprehensive history of the program, he recommends The
Last of a Breed, by 61-E graduate
Errol Severe, which covers the entire Flying/Aviation Cadet Pilot Training
Program from its inception in 1917 until its termination in 1961.
A reunion was held for graduates in October of 1997, which you may read about
later in this feature. For a web site devoted to the USAF Aviation Cadet
Pilot Training Program click here.
Following are a few photos and cartoons from the Cap'n's classbook from Reese
AFB, in Lubbock Texas, as well as links to other information about the program.
The picture quality isn't all that could be desired. They were scanned
from a thirty-eight-year-old publication, produced with a limited
budget. He has enhanced the photos as much as possible, given his
limited expertise in that area and his rudimentary equipment.
Pictured on the left is Lt. Jerry Daley,
Instructor par excellénce (he had to be to nurse your host through the
program). In the picture on the right: Students John Duggan, left, Lt. Daley,
center and “Pappy” Rawl, right.
